During the performance, Roger Waters started to sing "Pigs on the Wing 2", but was interrupted by an audience member setting off a firecracker near the stage. He stopped singing and shouted out, "Oh, for fuck's sake. Stop letting off fireworks and shouting and screaming. I'm trying to sing a song." The crowd cheered at this. He continued: "I mean I don't care. If you don't wanna hear it, you know... Fuck you! I'm sure there's a lot of people here who do want to hear it. So why don't you just be quiet... If you wanna let your fireworks off, go outside and let them off out there. And if you wanna shout and scream and holler go and do it out there but... I'm trying to sing a song that some people want to listen to. I want to listen to it!" He then continued with the song. The situation continued to deteriorate, however, and during "Pigs (Three Different Ones)", Waters watched incredulously as one fan climbed the netting that separated the audience from the band. Out of disgust, Waters spat in the fan's face. Near the end of the show, Pink Floyd guitarist and singer David Gilmour was reported to have walked off the stage in disgust, sitting out the final encore. Following the performance, Waters regretted his actions, and began to lament the separation between the audience and band. It was this which caused Waters to come up with the idea of the critically acclaimed album The Wall. The band would not play at the stadium again until 1988, after Waters' departure, on their A Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. On that occasion, the performance went smoothly. They subsequently returned to the venue on their 1994 The Division Bell tour. The 1977 show has been released as a bootleg, humorously titled "Who Was Trained Not To Spit on the Fan". This title is derived from the lyrics to the song "Dogs" - the actual lyrics are "Who Was Trained Not To Spit in the Fan." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Stadium_(Montreal) in montreal, july 6, 1977, the last show of the tour that year, an inebriated fan tries to climb the barrier at the front of the stage to get closer to the band. waters, after spotting the fence-climber, cajoles him on toward the stage, and as he nears, waters spits in his face. it was at this very show, and particularly at that moment, that waters detaches himself from the rock 'fame/stardom' thing, and begins the idea... that will become the album- 'The Wall'. the floyd had grown so overblown and so unreal, that waters removes himself from it. on the wall, he even goes so far as to split with his fellow bandmates, to the point where he demands that nick mason (drums) and rick wright (keys), either receive NO credit for their production of the record, or else they leave. mason stayed, sans credit... wright said no, and left the band. subsequently, the 'final cut' record which followed was recorded without rick wright. -------- the 'spit' story, from the band members-- July 6th, 1977. On the last night of the "Animals In The Flesh" tour at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, Roger Waters spits at a fan. DAVID GILMOUR: I can remember not enjoying it much as a show. They'd just finished building this big stadium and the crane was still in there, they forgot to dismantle it and couldn't get it out. I was so unenamoured that I went out and sat on the mixing desk for the encore - that might have not contributed to Roger's mood. I think Roger was disgusted with himself really that he had let himself go sufficiently to spit at a fan. ROGER WATERS: I'm not sure I hit him. NICK MASON: Well, Roger is not exactly a man known for peace and love - but we were sympathetic, even if we didn't feel as passionately as he did - those stadium shows are very strange. When we're playing, we're watching the audience, the same way the audience is watching us, and all you can really see is those front rows and - I'm not saying they're all nutters, but what you tend to get, particularly if it's what's euphemistically called "festival-seating" - ie no seats - is the people who are mad enough to be able to push their way to the front, the air-guitar players, the people who know all the words and rather sad ones who have been waiting all day and collapse just as the band comes on-stage. DAVID GILMOUR: Roger never liked touring anyway very much, he was always rather tense and irritable. He was disgusted with the business in many ways, as we all were. The big change came with the huge success of "Dark Side Of The Moon" - the audiences liked to "interact," shout a lot. Previous to then, even though we played large places, 10,000-seaters, you could hear a pin drop at appropriate moments. So it had been a shock - but four years on I was getting used to the idea that that's the way it had to be. ROGER WATERS: It just became more and more oppressive. Those places weren't built for music, they were built for sporting events, and it's not unnatural to experience a ritualisation of war, because that's all sport is. What was going through my mind - my whole body - was an enormous sense of frustration, a feeling of what are we all doing here, what's the point? And the answer that kept clanging back monotonously was: cash and ego. That's all it's about. BOB EZRIN: I met Roger through his then wife Carolyne, who once worked for me. On the "Animals" tour, they stopped in Toronto where I was living, and on the limousine ride out to the gig Roger told me about his feeling of alienation from the audience and his desire sometimes to put a wall between him and them. I recall saying flippantly, "Well why don't you?" A year, 18 months later I got a call asking me to come to his home to talk to him about the possibility of working together on this project called "The Wall." http://www.headonradio.com/forum/read.php?5,54577,page=1 Original release notes: WEED ANNOUNCEMENT WHO WAS TRAINED NOT TO SPIT ON THE FAN? Montreal, 06 July 1977. HRV-CDR-023 is now available. I finished editing this two CDR set two weeks ago. I sent them to Will to begin distribution. But Will seems to be out-of-pocket for awhile. So I'll get this one started by taking one volunteer. Then Will can join the fun when he gets back. Many of you are already familiar with this show as Azimuth Coordinator #2 and various other names. So let me tell you: THIS SHOW COMES FROM A DIFFERENT SOURCE And according to Ron, a better source. For example, AzCo2 has the encore marred by an audience member near the taper repeatedly requesting Dark Side of the Moon. Spit on the Fan's taper had no such chatter box nearby. And speaking of the audience, the audience is definitely the star of this show. An extremely rambunctious crowd, with lots of whistling, screaming, and fireworks. That's right, explosions from the fans lighting off fireworks. After one such explosion, Roger stops singing with his infamous, "Ah for fuck's sake, stop letting off fireworks and shouting and screaming; I'm trying to sing a song!" At another point, Roger actually spits on fan attempting to improve his vantage point. I guess being rowdy can sometimes have it's advantages. The Floyd played an extra encore. Hoping to stave off an impending riot, they played a slow blues number to calm everyone down before finishing. So, Montreal joins Oakland (Animal Instincts) as the only two venues to be treated to three encores during the '77 tour. At opposite ends of the spectrum: in Oakland, an extremely well behaved audience is treated to Careful With That Axe, Eugene. While in Montreal, an angry mob is sedated with an ad-libbed blues piece. The two CDR set tracks as follows: Who Was Trained Not to Spit on the Fan? (HRV-CDR-023) disc 1: 1) 11:30.0 Sheep (First Set Begins) 2) 2:09.6 Pigs on the Wing 1 3) 18:45.1 Dogs 4) 4:02.9 Pigs on the Wing 2 5) 19:39.1 Pigs - Three Different Ones 6) 13:44.0 Shine on You Crazy Diamond 1-5 (Second Set Begins) 7) 8:22.9 Welcome to the Machine ------- 78:13.6 disc 2: 1) 5:37.2 Have a Cigar 2) 6:25.5 Wish You Were Here 3) 23:49.6 Shine on You Crazy Diamond 6-9 4) 11:51.9 Money (First Encore) 5) 10:48.2 Us & Them (Second Encore) 6) 13:33.7 Blues (Third Encore) ------- 72:06.1 As you can see, disc 1 requires an 80min CDR. Now I talked about the audience being the star of the show, but the band is in top form as well. It's been argued that this version of P3DO is best of the tour. Well, you be the judge. As is now the custom, distribution will be by the Shorten format. Each weeder promises to make 3 copies for continuing the weed. Those wishing to start this weed should send me (ed.paule@...) their name and address. I will choose one person at random tomorrow after this message appears in the digest. Enjoy the Show, Ed.
